Festival of Monsters featured in 2027 Documentary
Independent filmmaker Michael Caplan of Montrose Pictures brought the allure of Hollywood to the 2025 Festival of Monsters academic conference. Caplan, who is making a feature-length documentary about monsters and monster studies, interviewed a number of speakers during the conference. His film, entitled Marvelous Creatures, is currently in the editing phase and is planned to be completed in 2027. The film will be released to film festivals and eventually to streaming services.
Marvelous Creatures is described as “a documentary about the myths, cultural constructs and psychological underpinnings of that which we call Monsters.” Among the academics interviewed for the documentary are Center co-directors Michael Chemers (pictured right) and Renée Fox, along with 2025 Festival keynote speaker David Livingstone Smith (pictured below left) and Rosemarie Garland-Thomson (pictured below right).
Caplan’s other films include Algren, about the life and legacy of Nelson Algren, author of The Man with the Golden Arm; and A Magical Vision, which explores the work of magician Eugene Berger.
